Autonomy are a company who started life in Cambridge in the UK.
Mike Lynch was studying at Cambridge University and was offered a project where he had to take all the output from an unspecified country, newspapers, magazines, web pages etc and build something that could understand them without any human input - spy kit that allowed a government to understand what was being said without mere mortals having to be there reading possibly sensitive data.
He managed to work it and from this one company was formed which then led to Autonomy being formed.
If you look at Autonomy technology now you will find the core of their offering is the Intelligent Data Operating Layer or IDOL.
The IDOL is designed to cope with Unstructured Data, any and all of the information that enters and leaves a company. This is everything from phone calls to emails, in fact over 1000 different data types.
