Gold Star: Certified Conflict-Free

There are currently no certified conflict-free products available on the market. This is because companies and governments are still developing the processes through which supply chains can be thoroughly monitored in order to ensure that conflict minerals, responsible for fueling a deadly conflict in eastern Congo, do not end up in our products.

Ideal supply chain monitoring processes will include systems that trace the origin of minerals to the actual mine, independent audits of the supply chain that are verified by third parties beyond the company itself, and the creation of an international minerals certification system that ensures any minerals sourced from Congo or the region no longer fund armed militias or promote the current systems of forced labor and mass atrocities.

In our consumer action guide you will find information on what steps electronics companies are taking now to work toward certified conflict-free products. Although even the best company is only 32% of the way there, the leading companies are making positive strides, especially in comparison to other companies within the industry.

Please use your consumer voice to keep calling strongly for certified-conflict free products so that we can begin to fill in this category and have a much better indication that our companies and our economic practices are doing all they can to realize a more peaceful and stable eastern Congo.
